Provisioning of Intel Architecture-powered laptop PCs to newly enrolled students enhances IT skills proficiency.
Global City Innovative College (GCIC) and Intel Technology Philippines recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide new Intel Architecture-powered laptop PCs to newly enrolled GCIC students. The objective of the MOU is to better prepare GCIC students for success in today’s increasingly IT-dependent work environment.
The joint initiative is the first curriculum-integrated college laptop program being made available to college-level students in the Philippines. It has been formulated under the Intel World Ahead program, an initiative Intel started in 2006 to bring the benefits of technology to more people globally.
“The onus is on all educational institutions to provide a good learning environment that emulates what students will encounter once they start work,” says GCIC’s President Michael Tan. “In almost every industry these days, whether that’s nursing, hospitality, tourism, healthcare, or general business administration, people require a higher level of IT proficiency to work in an increasing Internetconnected, PC-based environment.”
“Organizations know and understand the important role technology plays for increasing operational efficiency and profitability. In order for our students to be globally competitive, GCIC has integrated IT skills proficiency into the training curriculum, which is now further enhanced through the ownership of personal laptop PCs,” Tan concluded.
GCIC’s current course offerings include IT skillsbased training for nursing, business management, accounting, teaching, and many other technical and vocational courses. For example, the school’s nursing curriculum is designed specifically to train students to hurdle the tough local board examinations, and foreign assessments like the NCLEX, CGFNS, TOEFL and TSE. For students who wish to practice nursing internationally, GCIC proactively uses technology to improve its administrative function and medium of instruction to prepare its students for global competency.

Under the new program, Intel Architecture-powered laptop PCs will be provided for all incoming GCIC students of school year 2008-2009. Financing for laptop PCs will be reflected in student tuition fees in the initial enrollment year.
“Helping students get the most from their education is immensely valuable, not just to the individual, but to society and the economy in general,” said Intel Philippines Country Manager Ricky Banaag.
“Intel is pleased to assist GCIC in fulfilling its goal of offering globally competitive learning to local students as a way to accelerate digital literacy, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking, thus preparing them to be more competitive in today’s fastchanging world.”
Intel’s participation incorporates match-making Intel authorized dealers to provide GCIC students with laptop PCs, as well as offering technology support and warranty through its distribution network. Intel will also seek out educational content to enhance the learning experience through the PC by working with content providers and software developers. It will also assist GCIC in setting up wireless Internet networks for the entire campus area.
